Great Circle Associates logo Network-Automation Mailing List

The Network-Automation mailing list is for discussions of issues related to automating network configuration and management, including (but not limited to) methods, mechanisms, techniques, philosophies, policies, and products (in general; questions about specific products should be directed to the mailing list dedicated to that particular product).

The Network-Automation mailing list is hosted by Great Circle Associates.

Background

Since 1990 or so, much of the research in the system administration field has focused on automation. It's now well accepted that a well-run operation doesn't manage 10,000 servers individually, but rather uses tools like cfengine to manage definitions of those servers and then create instances of those servers as needed. In the networking world, though, most of us seem to be still manually configuring (and reconfiguring) every device.

Luke A. Kanies does a good job of explaining the logic behind an automated approach to network configuration and management in his article Automating Network Administration.

The key benefits that he sees from automation are:

  1. Reducing the amount of time a given task requires.
  2. Reducing the opportunity for error in a given task.
  3. Reducing turnaround time for a given task.
  4. Enhancing and perpetuating configuration consistency across multiple systems.
  5. Providing a limited kind of process documentation.
These benefits (particularly the 4th one, consistency) are critical if your goal is to offer a reliable service (increasing MTBF and decreasing MTTR).

Subscription Information

The list is available in both regular and digest formats. Subscribers to the regular format receive each message as it is posted to the list. If you expect to participate in discussions on the list, you are encouraged to subscribe to the regular format.

Subscribers to the digest receive all the same messages as the regular list, but collected into daily digests (so that you get a single big message each day, rather than lots of little individual messages). Digests are available in both old-fashioned text format and a more modern "MIME" format which is easier to deal with in some mail programs.

To subscribe, simply fill in your email address and select your preferred format, and then click the "Subscribe" button.

Archives

All messages sent to the list are publicly available in a web-based archive, as well as searchable via Google and other search engines.

We strongly believe that searchable archives of past messages are one of the most important features of Internet mailing lists such as this one, and that it's critical that those archives be complete and accurate representations of the discussions on the list. Therefore, as a general rule we will not honor requests to edit the archives to remove or modify particular postings. So, be thoughtful before posting; you're going to have to live with whatever you say being in the archives forever, searchable by employers, family members, etc.

Note that, if you post messages to the list, the email address you post from will likely be harvested from the archives by spammers. We have carefully considered this problem, and concluded that there really isn't any way we can prevent that while still maintaining useful and searchable archives. You should take whatever steps you feel are appropriate to protect yourself, such as using a strong spam-filtering system or posting from throw-away accounts.

Policies

Harvesting of email addresses from this mailing list or its archives for any purpose (but particularly commercial mailings) is prohibited.

You can subscribe a local redistribution list or a gateway to a local newsgroup, as long as whatever you do is local to your site. This restriction makes it much easier for us to track down mailer problems.

We're very aggressive when it comes to bounced email. If email to you starts bouncing, we'll probably drop you from the list fairly quickly; you'll have to resubscribe when you get the problem fixed, and retrieve the archives to find out what you missed.
